Making Really Old Floppies in the Modern Age
Intel iMac running OS X Tiger:
- CAN download from the Internet
- CAN extract files made with modern compression software
- CANNOT make 800k or 400k floppies
- CANNOT run old Mac apps like Disk Copy and DART
- CAN be an FTP server
Power Computing clone running System 7.6.1:
- CANNOT download (very well) from the Internet
- CANNOT extract files made with modern compression software
- CANNOT speak AppleShare to iMac over ethernet
- CAN download from iMac-as-FTP-server over ethernet, using old Fetch FTP client
- CAN run old Mac apps like Disk Copy and DART
- CAN make semi-old (800k) floppies
- CANNOT make really old (400k) floppies
- CAN be an AppleShare server
Asante LocalTalk-to-ethernet adapter:
- CAN allow the ethernet-connected Power Mac to speak AppleShare to the LocalTalk-connected SE/30
Macintosh SE/30 running System 7.0.1:
- CANNOT speak AppleShare to iMac over ethernet
- CANNOT run Fetch to connect to iMac FTP server
- CAN speak AppleShare to not-so-old Power Mac via LocalTalk via Asante adapter
- CAN make really old (400k) floppies using DART
So, in a nutshell...
- Download disk image foo.img.zip and DART; extract both
- FTP both from iMac (server) to Power Mac (client)
- AppleShare both from Power Mac (server) to SE/30 (client)
- Make floppy on SE/30 with DART
