Chechen Rebels Refuse Truce
Russia-The Russian government proposed a two-week cease-fire with Chechen rebels to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II. However, the rebels refused, alleging that the proposal was propaganda.

Fighting Continues in Somalia
Somalia-Rival clans in Mogadishu have done the heaviest fighting ever since the United Nations withdrew their peacekeeping efforts. Last Friday clans fought with machine guns, mortars, and antitank weapons in the streets, killing 20 and wounding 48.

Conditions Worsen for Prisoners in Iraq
Iraq-The wives of the two men being held in an Iraqi prison said that their husbands are in poor health and unable to handle the physical stress of imprisonment. According to Baghdad officials, one of the men was admitted to a hospital complaining of chest pains, although U.S. sources claim that both were hospitalized.

Worker Killed in Frankfurt by Mail Bomb
Germany-A package exploded in Frankfurt's main parcel-sorting office, which killed one postal worker and injured 11 others. No one has claimed responsibility and there was no advance warning.

Extremists Suspected in Algerian Killings
Algeria-five foreigners and an Algerian policeman were killed at a factory at dawn Saturday. Authorities suspect Muslim extremists, as they have targeted foreigners in the past. Since 1993, 82 foreigners have been killed in Algeria.

Mormon Church Promises to End Baptisms of Holocaust Dead
Utah-On Friday the Mormon Church agreed to stop posthumous baptisms of Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The Mormon Church believes that posthumous baptism gives every spirit a chance to accept or reject baptism in the "true Church of Jesus Christ."
